ASUS and Amazon Bring Kindle for Netbooks

by Matthew Smith on May 24, 2010

Amazon’s Kindle hardware may be under pressure from the iPad, but that doesn’t mean that Amazon is giving up on the idea. In fact, Amazon is quite smartly hedging their bets by putting out Kindle software for various devices, one of which will soon be netbooks – or at least ASUS netbooks.

The partnership means that ASUS netbooks sold through Amazon.com will ship with a Kindle application pre-installed. The Kindle software will connect to the Kindle store like any other Kindle enabled device, although one imagines the interface should be very robust and easy to use considering that netbooks do, in fact, have a dedicated keyboard and mouse.

Currently four ASUS netbooks are shipping with the Kindle software:

1005PE-MU27- BK
1005PE-MU27-BU
1005PE-MU27-WT
1005PE-MU27-PI

Or, in other words, just the 1005PE’s various colors. Two notebooks are also shipping with this software:

UL30A-X5K
UL30VT-X1K

Perhaps even bigger news, however, is the fact that the Kindle for PC software is available for download by anyone. Just head over to Amazon.com and you
