Due to recent news of Intel releasing a new dual core Atom I received a question – if I want to buy a dual core Atom netbook now, what do I buy?
Right now, the only dual core Atom processor found in Netbook is the Atom N330. It is a 1.6Ghz dual core processor based off the older Diamondville designs of the original Atom processors. And the only Atom N330 netbook which you can buy right now is the ASUS Eee PC 1201N, . Besides the Atom N330 processor, the Eee PC 1201N also has 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive. It would be nice to have more choices, but this is not a terrible situation – at least the only Atom N330 netbook is a good one.
Why aren’t there more choices of Atom N330 netbooks? The reasons are price and battery life. The Atom N330 consumes a lot more power than a normal Atom processor, and it is hard to achieve netbook-level battery life as a result. Also, the higher price makes the N330 an unattractive option in anything other than 12-inch premium netbooks and nettops. It will be interesting to see if the new dual core Atom will change any of this, or if it will also be considered a processor best suited for nettops.
