After Pinetrail’s disappointing launch, Intel is finally starting to develop new Atoms which may provide somewhat better performance than previous models. According to Fudzilla, there are currently two new Atom products in the works.
The first is a dual-core Atom clocked at 1.5Ghz with a TDP of 8.5 watts. There are of course dual core Atoms already available, but they are generally not placed it netbooks because they consume battery life too quickly. The new 1.5Ghz Atoms should consume only about 20% more power than single-core models. That is a big hit, but seems like a worthwhile trade if you want more performance.
News has also broken that Intel will be releasing a new single-core Atom with a clock speed of 1.83Ghz. These products will have a 6.5 watt TDP and present a modest boost in performance over the current Atoms. This is not a replacement, however. The current Pinetrail Atom processors will continue to be sold.
