AMD Receives First Bobcat Samples

by Matthew Smith on April 22, 2010

It appears that AMD has received its first samples of a Fusion based chip code-named Ontario, which uses AMD’s new Bobcat micro-architecture. What this means is that AMD has received the first working examples of the new architecture. Revisions are almost always required, but it does indicate that AMD is moving swiftly towards the debut of new Fusion based processors. It was earlier thought that these may not debut until very late in 2011, but it seems AMD is ahead of schedule.

This new Bobcat architecture is a big deal, because it is directly aimed at Atom. It is essentially a system-on-a-chip design which includes a memory controller and integrated DirectX 11 graphics. It is the inclusion of that last bit which particularly interesting, as graphics have always been a huge weakness of Atom. If Bobcat includes something on the level of, say, a Mobility Radeon HD3200, it would big news.

But even if the graphics are not that powerful, AMD is hoping to be able to knock the socks off Atom. The new Bobcat processors are dual-core designs which AMD claims will in some configurations be able to run on less than a single watt of power.
